Where to Buy a SIM Card at Cairo Airport?

The three main mobile network operators in Egypt are Vodafone, Orange, and Etisalat. All three have kiosks at Cairo Airport, but they are located at the luggage belts. Vodafone and Etisalat are located at luggage belt 4 and 5 and Orange is at luggage belt 1.

Travelers arriving at Cairo International Airport have a few different network and data package options to choose from when purchasing a local SIM card.

The three major networks available are Orange, Vodafone, and WE

What I Need to Prepare for Getting Egypt SIM Card at Cairo Airport?

Purchasing and setting up a SIM card at Cairo Airport is very quick and straightforward.

Passport: You must present your passport when buying a SIM card in Egypt. Photocopies are not accepted. The seller will take down some information from your passport.

Unlocked phone: Your smartphone will need to be unlocked to use a foreign SIM card. Contact your home carrier prior to travel to unlock your phone if needed.

SIM card size: Bring your SIM removal tool. Egyptian SIM cards come in standard, micro, and nano sizes. Inform the seller which size you need.

Data Packages: It’s important to consider the length of your trip and your anticipated data needs. For a short 3-5 day visit, a package offering 5-10GB will likely suffice. If staying 1-2 weeks, 10-20GB packages provide a comfortable amount. Heavy streaming users should opt for unlimited daily data plans.

eSIM Egypt – Alternative to SIM Card at Cairo Airport

Skip the hassle of trying to purchase a SIM card when you land at Cairo International Airport! While airport SIM kiosks promise connectivity convenience, travelers often endure long lines and pay inflated prices that don’t match local rates. For a simpler solution, pre-purchase an Egypt eSIM online from EgypteSIM.com before your trip.

Simply download the eSIM profile via email and you’ll have internet access right away – without ever having to swap SIM cards. Say goodbye to roaming fees and uneven coverage as Egypt eSIM gives you unrestricted access to high-speed 4G/LTE networks across Egypt.

Yes, both Orange, Etisalat, Vodafone and WE have SIM card kiosks located after customs and baggage claim inside the airport.

Is there free wifi in Cairo airport?

There is free basic WiFi provided throughout Cairo airport’s terminals. However, it can occasionally be slow or disconnected.

Yes, you will be able to connect to the mobile data network right away using your new SIM if you have an unlocked phone. Be sure to purchase a data package when you buy your SIM.

Do I need to show ID other than my passport?

Your passport is the only identification required to purchase an Egyptian SIM card as a foreign traveler.

How much are Egypt SIM cards at the airport?

Expect to pay $6.5-$13.5 for basic starter packs. Airport SIM prices are usually higher than retail stores outside the airport.

Can I activate Egypt eSIM at Cairo airport?

Yes, if you have purchased an eSIM package in advance you can activate it upon arrival. However, it’s best to activate your eSIM at least 1 day before landing to ensure connectivity while traveling from the airport to your hotel.

Always check for internet access before attempting activation.

           Final Words

While buying a SIM card upon arrival can be convenient, travelers should be aware of some potential downsides to purchasing at Cairo International Airport. The kiosks and storefronts inside tend to charge high prices that don’t reflect local rates in Egypt. Lines can also be long as many passengers flock to buy SIMs right after deplaning. An alternative worth considering is to pre-purchase an Egypt eSIM before your trip.

Egypt is actually extremely cheap to travel on your own, with decent infrastructure built out for the major tourist spots. You just have to be careful and do your research beforehand on what prices to expect and look up reviews before booking anything.

Egyptian cuisine shares similarities with food of the Eastern Mediterranean region, such as rice-stuffed vegetables, grape leaves, shawerma, kebab and kofta, with some variation and differences in preparation. Some consider koshary, a mixture of rice, lentils, and macaroni, to be the national dish.

In restaurants, it is customary to tip between 10-15% of the total bill. For hotel staff, such as housekeeping, bellhops, and doormen, a tip of 20-30 Egyptian pounds per service is appropriate. For tour guides, a tip of +20 1000412135 Egyptian pounds per day is customary, depending on the length and quality of the tour.

Egypt, a country linking northeast Africa with the Middle East, dates to the time of the pharaohs. Millennia-old monuments sit along the fertile Nile River Valley, including Giza's colossal Pyramids and Great Sphinx as well as Luxor's hieroglyph-lined Karnak Temple and Valley of the Kings tombs. The capital, Cairo, is home to Ottoman landmarks like Muhammad Ali Mosque and the Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities.

Most things to do in Egypt

The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt are the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to survive into the modern era. Everything else has vanished or crumbled or been destroyed by man or nature, yet these massive monuments have stood the test of time and are still standing today.

The Pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Egypt

For many, Egypt’s pyramids and the Great Sphinx represent the ultimate travel bucket list item. Shrouded in mystery and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the pyramids are synonymous with Egypt. Likewise, their human-headed, lion-bodied neighbor is one of the first landmarks that comes to mind when you think about the Land of the Pharaohs.

I had dreamed of visiting Egypt for years just to stand in the shadow of some of the oldest, most recognized structures on the planet. Their history—both known and unknown—has fascinated Adam and me and lead to plenty of discussions about what it would be like to visit the pyramid complex in person. For me, the pyramids and the Sphinx were on par with standing before the moai of Easter Island, on the Great Wall of China, or on the ice in Antarctica. Those experiences were overwhelming in their personal significance for me, and I knew my visit to Giza would feel the same way. Additionally, in 2011 I just missed a chance to see them; weeks before I was set to depart for Cairo to attend a conference the event was cancelled after the country’s revolution made travel to the region undesirable. Since then, visiting has been a significant goal and a chance to reclaim an experience that took a long time to come back to me.

           THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA, EGYPT

The pyramids of Giza are among the oldest manmade buildings in existence. Built around 2500 BC, they are located just to the south of bustling Cairo and about five miles (nine kilometers) west of the Nile River; today, like all those centuries ago, 95 percent of Egypt’s population lives close to the Nile. The pyramids are built on the Giza Plateau, and while most people know of the three largest pyramids—including the Great Pyramid—there are six other structures that are part of the complex and were built around the same time. Construction likely took close to 100 years, which meant five different pharaohs oversaw the work and between 15,000 and 40,000 workers were actively engaged on the project at any given time.

There are still many questions about how the pyramids were designed, the construction techniques necessary to build them, and how the materials were sourced. While there are some questions to which we may never have answers, we do know more about the origin of the pyramids thanks to records that have been found throughout the country. Most notably, in 2013 archaeologists discovered several papyrus scrolls hundreds of miles away that detailed how the Ancient Egyptians built the pyramids. Written primarily in hieroglyphics and now known as the Diary of Merer, the scrolls document how 200 workers journeyed more than 500 miles (850 meters) to Aswan in the southern part of the country to get red granite, which was then floated up the Nile and used to build the Great Pyramid.

Astronomy played a big role in Ancient Egypt, and the pyramids of Giza may also be rooted in a somewhat religious worship of the sky. Each of the three pyramids—Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure—are precisely oriented to the north, south, east, and west, as if the workers had used a compass to position them. The three pyramids are also closely aligned to the three stars that are found in the Orion constellation, specifically in his belt. Orion is linked to the Egyptian god Osiris, the god of the afterlife and rebirth, which may tie into the purpose of the pyramid complex.

The pyramids of Giza are interesting in comparison to other structures found throughout the country. While pyramids were often used as tombs for Egypt’s kings and queens, no tombs, mummies, or human remains were found in Giza’s pyramid complex. Additionally, the interior is almost devoid of hieroglyphics that decorate tombs in Luxor, Aswan, and other locations in Egypt. Some theories suggest the tombs were raided centuries ago, and the bodies and valuables were removed at that time, and others note that the pyramids were once encased in limestone that bore hieroglyphics but have long since been removed. With well over 4,000 years between their initial construction and today’s theories, these mysteries may remain for quite some time.

Beyond the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure are six additional pyramids. Three of them are known as the Queen’s Pyramids, which belonged to Khufu’s mother, Khafre’s mother, and Khufu’s wife. The others served as temples or tombs. The pyramid complex also includes two extensive cemeteries to the east and west of the Pyramid of Khufu where a number of royalty were buried.

           THE SPHINX

The Giza plateau is also home to the Great Sphinx, the pyramids’ famous neighbor.Although the Sphinx looms large even next to the enormous pyramids just a few hundred yards away, the questions about how and why it came into existence feel even bigger. The most widely believed theory suggests the Sphinx was built at the same time as the pyramids and boasts the face of Pharaoh Khafre. Many other theories exist, though, with some stating the face might be Khufu’s instead and some suggesting the head isn’t intended to be human but rather a dog or Anubis, which was the Egyptian god of the dead.

At one point the Sphinx had both a nose and a beard, but today both are missing. Although a favorite theory proposes that Napoleon’s army shot a cannonball into the Sphinx’s nose (a theory that has been disproven thanks to noseless descriptions that predate Napoleon’s time in Egypt), a more accepted theory recounts how the nose was destroyed in the 1370s by an Egyptian who was dismayed by people bringing offerings to the Sphinx and worshiping as if it might be a god. There may be some truth to that idea; the Sphinx has the body of a lion, which is connected to sun worship and the Leo constellation.

Between the Sphinx’s paws is a more modern addition: the Dream Stele. The Dream Stele is a large stone tablet installed by Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Thutmose IV. The inscription has not been completely translated, but through prose it tells a story that suggests the sun god Ra bestowed the pharaohship upon him. According to the Dream Stele, prince Thutmose went to the Sphinx at midday and fell asleep while resting in the shadow of the Sphinx. The Sphinx then spoke directly to him and promised him kingship over the land if he would unearth the body of the Sphinx by removing the sand that had buried it up to the neck for generations.

           Luxor And Aswan

Luxor and Aswan are two of Egypt's most captivating cities, brimming with history, culture, and stunning landscapes. Often referred to as the world's greatest open-air museum, Luxor is home to remarkable ancient sites that transport visitors back to the time of the Pharaohs.

Karnak Temple, one of the largest temple complexes in the world, is a must-visit in Luxor. Its towering columns and intricate hieroglyphics offer a glimpse into the spiritual life of ancient Egyptians. Nearby, the Valley of the Kings houses the tombs of legendary pharaohs, including the famous Tutankhamun. Exploring these tombs provides a profound connection to the past, showcasing the artistry and beliefs of ancient Egyptian civilization.

Just a short journey south lies Aswan, known for its serene landscapes and the stunning Nile River. The Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, is beautifully located on an island and can be reached by a scenic boat ride. Aswan is also famous for the High Dam, a marvel of modern engineering that controls the Nile’s floods and provides hydroelectric power.

A cruise along the Nile between Luxor and Aswan offers breathtaking views of lush greenery contrasted against the arid desert landscape, dotted with ancient monuments. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil beauty of the river while exploring the local culture, including traditional Nubian villages.

Together, Luxor and Aswan provide an unforgettable journey through Egypt's rich history, making them essential stops for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the wonders of this ancient land.

How To Get Visa To Egypt?

To obtain an entry visa for Egypt, there are three primary options depending on your nationality and purpose of travel

What is an Egypt Entry Visa ?

Tourist visa to enter Egypt: online e-visa, visa upon arrival at the airport, and more! Which is the best?

When it comes time to take your Egypt adventure, you will need a visa in order to enter the country. There are two main options for getting a tourist visa: buying an online e-visa in advance, or buying it upon arrival at the airport, any airport, (or land/sea border crossing) once your arrive in Egypt. This blog post will go over how to do each option, and which one we think is best…hint: it’s to buy it at the airport!

For Canadians, and citizens of other certain countries (like India, Indonesia, and others), you must get a visa ahead of your trip at the Egyptian consulate or embassy in your home country. You cannot enter Egypt without doing this in advance. The process may take 6 months - 1 year or more, so be sure to look into how to get a visa in advance, as soon as you make your travel plans.

Should I get the visa online in advance or buy it at the airport?

Having gotten the visa upon arrival at Cairo International Airport many, many times, and also having gotten the e-visa online in advance, here are my thoughts on which Egypt visa is the best:

          Online (advance) visa pros:

-You can pay the fee by credit card

-You have the visa ahead of time and do not need to go to the bank queue, but you still need to wait in a passport line

          Online (advance) visa cons:

          -Confusing website to navigate

          -Lots of steps

-More time (about 45 minutes) vs. about 15-30 minutes at the airport, and often less

-Hassle of needing to remember your visa and bring it with in transit

-You still need to wait in the same passport line as everyone else who just got the visa upon arrival

-You need to print out a paper copy of the e-visa and have it with you (don’t lose it!)

Visa at the airport (upon arrival) pros:

-Easy: no steps needed, just give the bank teller $25 cash, and you get a visa

-Fast: I usually wait 15-30 minutes in line, but often less than this, and the counter is a money exchange counter too, so I get to exchange currency at the same time

-Convenient: I do not need to spend time before my trip filling in online paperwork, waiting for the visa to be delivered, and then remembering to bring it with. I can just buy it at the airport, and the booths are open 24 hours

Visa at the airport (upon arrival) cons:

-You have to pay $25 USD cash, and they sometimes do not have change

As you can see, the ease of buying the visa upon arrival at the airport, along with the price being the same (you do not save any money buying your visa online), makes buying the visa upon arrival my recommendation for travelers to Egypt.

How to buy a visa upon arrival at Cairo Airport (or any airport/border)

Now, let’s go over how to buy your visa once you arrive in Egypt.

Note: not every nationality can buy their visa upon arrival. Check with your embassy to make sure your country is able to get a visa upon arrival to Egypt. This changes from time to time: for example, Canadians no longer can get visas upon arrival to Egypt, but they used to be able to. So it’s up to you to stay up-to-date with the current requirements for your country.

After your flight lands at Cairo International Airport, you will be ferried through the arrival section of the airport, checked for your Covid-19 paperwork, and then will come out to an area where there are bank tellers, who also sell the entry visas. This will look different depending on which terminal you come in on, but I always enter at Terminal 2 (usually with Air France, KLM, British Airways, etc.), and there are always three banks that exchange currency and sell visas. The first bank counter, for Bank Misr, is always the most busy, so I opt to walk past that counter and head to either Banque du Caire or the National Bank of Egypt’s counters, where the lines are usually short or non-existent.

Go up to the bank teller, tell them you want to buy a visa, and give the teller $25 USD cash (they also accept Euros or GBP). This is the only inconvenient thing about buying a visa at the airport—they do not accept credit cards, and you sometimes need to have exact change, so I always recommend paying in exact change, $25.

The bank teller will then give you a sticker, which you will take with you to passport control. Do not put the sticker in your passport, because passport control will do this for you when they stamp the visa with your date of arrival to Egypt.

The convenient thing about buying the visa at the airport is that the bank teller who sells you your visa can also exchange foreign currency for you, so you can get two things done at the same spot: buy the visa, and purchase Egyptian Pounds.

How to get a tourist e-visa online, in advance?

While I do not recommend getting the visa online, in advance, considering the pros/cons I shared above, here is how a traveler can purchase their visa in advance if they choose to:

First, head to the correct website: www.visa2egypt.gov.eg

There are lots of scam websites out there that will get you a visa to Egypt that works, but will add on tons of fees, so you will pay much more than $25. The website I linked above is the ONLY legitimate website (run by the Egyptian government) that does not charge extra fees.

Once you are on the website, you will need to:

          Create an account

Verify your email and confirm your account

Log back on to the visa website (the one above) and enter in lots of information, like your identifying details, travel details, and passport information

Upload a picture of your passport, smaller than 500KB. I had to use a separate website to resize my image of my passport because the file size was too large to upload. What a headache!

Pay the $25 visa fee using a Visa or MasterCard

Wait for confirmation, then bring the visa with you on your Egypt trip, making sure not to lose or misplace it during the journey to Egypt!

Frequently asked questions about the visa for Egypt :

Are the banks at Cairo International Airport and the other airports open 24 hours a day?

Yes, the banks are open 24/7 at all the entry points and airports

Do the visa counters only accept USD?

They accept USD, British Pounds, and also Euros

Do I need to have new bills to buy the visa?

Yes, I recommend having crisp, new bills, with no folds, tears, creases, or any markings of any kind. The person at the visa counter may reject bills that have any flaws

How do I know if I can buy the visa upon arrival?

There are online sources that share this information, but since it is always changing, the best way to know if to contact your travel agent/tour company, and also the government entity (like the State Department in the United States) to see what the visa requirements are for your nationality.

Should I get the e-visa, or the visa upon arrival?

I highly recommend getting the visa upon arrival, if you qualify for it

How long is the tourist visa good for?

Both the e-visa and the visa upon arrival are good for 4 weeks, with a 2 week grace period (you can stay for up to 6 weeks)

What happens if I overstay my visa?

Various consequences, from paying a fine, being deported, or being banned from re-entering Egypt exist - do not overstay your visa

Can I buy the visa upon arrival with a credit card?

          No, only cash

Can I pay Egyptian Pounds for the visa upon arrival?

No, just US Dollars, Euros, or Pounds Sterling

Do I need proof of a return flight out of Egypt?

Technically, yes, although I have never been asked to show proof

Can I buy the visa upon arrival at Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh?

Yes, it’s available at any entry point to Egypt, so all airports, and all border crossings

So there you have it—how to get a tourist visa upon arrival at the airport, how to get it in advance online, and all the reasons why I think getting it upon arrival is the best option.
